Conscious sedation is best suited for apprehensive children or those with special needs. It involves giving your child oral medication that may calm them to reduce the anxiety or discomfort associated with dental treatment. Sometimes it is used in conjunction with nitrous oxide. It works best on children who want to cooperate, but are finding it difficult, (and need a bit more sedation than nitrous oxide can offer). It does not put your child to sleep.
Children who have this type of sedation are spared negative experiences relating to dentistry as the medicaments induce amnesia effects.
